Nevill Road PE and School Sport Termly Newsletter 1

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our termly newsletter which will keep you up to date with everything active that is happening at Nevill Road!     Although this was only Term 1, we have already been very busy both in and out of school with sporting activities.

Nevill Road Year 6 Young Ambassadors

Children in Year 6 were asked to apply for the role of ‘Young Ambassador’ this term.  The children wrote some excellent, persuasive letters as to why they should be chosen, making the decision very difficult.  Mr Elias and I did eventually choose 8 children to take on the role:

Abigail, Grace, Erin, Ella, Freddie, Alex, Adam and Natasha

Congratulations to these children!  The 8 Young Ambassadors will be taking part in some training on Friday 20th October.  Following this they will be promoting PE and School Sport though competitions, supporting and writing about events, as well as organising their own lunchtime club!

2017 Indoor Athletics Transition Event @ Sport City Manchester

On the morning of Wednesday 11th October,

Mr Elias went with 8 Year 6 children who competed against other schools in various athletics events. The events included: 60m sprint, 400m run, long jump and standing chest push. Each child competed in one field event and one track event – with them all eventually entered into a relay race where they ran as a team of 12 (boys and girls in separate teams) with children from Queensgate Primary and Bramhall High School. After a thoroughly competitive morning, the children sat down in their teams to hear the results. I was delighted to find out that our team, the Bramhall team, came second. There were 27 schools which took part and 9 teams in total – needless to say,

Mr Elias was extremely proud of the children’s achievements, as well as the way they represented the school.

Inclusion Rugby Festival

On Tuesday 3rd October, a group of children from Year 3-6 took part in an Inclusion Rugby Festival at Stockport Rugby Club.  Mrs Clarke accompanied the children to the event and reported that it was fantastic to see the children active and having fun!

Nevill Road Year 6 Play Leaders

A number of children in Year 6 have taken on the responsibility of being a play leader this term.  This involves setting up and managing areas for children to play games at lunchtime alongside our Cheshire Coaches.  They have done an excellent job so far and it’s making lunchtime a much more active time with lots of activities for children to enjoy.

As well as the Cheshire Coaches, we also have some other Sports Clubs available to our children:

Wednesday 3:30-4:30 Lacrosse for Year 5 and 6.

Wednesday 3:30-4:30 Street Dance (All Year groups)

Lunchtime Clubs

Tuesday: Mrs Sheldrake will be starting a Key Steps Gymnastics Club for all Year groups (limited numbers).

Thursday:  Mr Elias will be running clubs based on upcoming competitions.

Friday:  our Young Ambassadors will be starting a club of their own *Watch this space!*

After school on Mondays, Mr Elias has been running our football training sessions for years 5 & 6. We played against Moss Hey in our first cup match of the year. Although we played well and gave 100%, unfortunately we lost this match. Our next match was in the Metro Cup, away against St Pauls. Our performance was much improved from the first game and we showed great team work and confidence; however luck was not on our side and again we lost. Let’s hope our luck changes and we see the results reflecting what the players deserve.

Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics

Only yesterday a group of 19 Year 5 & 6 pupils went to Hazel Grove High School after school with Mr Elias to take part in a Sportshall Athletics tournament.  The children were a credit to the school and showed fantastic team work. There were many different field and track events that the children competed in, including: Obstacle Replay, 1, 2, 4 and 6 Lap Replay, Chest Push, Standing Long Jump and Triple Jump, Soft Javelin and Speed Bounce. They showed how much the Indoor Athletics club, which was held this past half term during Tuesday lunchtimes, paid off. After a highly competitive afternoon, we were delighted to come third overall. Once again, we would like to congratulate the children on their achievements and know it’s the beginning of many more.

Things to watch out for next term:

*Cross country at Marple Hall on Tuesday 21st November

*Dodgeball for Year 5/6 at Bramhall High on Wednesday 22nd November

*Primary Active Girls’ Day on Thursday 23rd November

*Quicksticks Hockey Year 5/6 at Bramhall High School on Tuesday 28th November
