Newsletter week beginning 15/09/14

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that you are now back into the swing of the school routine and that your children have settled well into their new classes and sets.

Building work and bike racks: Throughout last week we have been having a few bits and pieces finished in the new mobile classrooms. All whiteboards are now working and pegs in the new cloakrooms have been sorted out!
The old mobiles will be removed during October half term, with the area being landscaped and additional bike racks provided for our children in Years 5 and 6. Please continue to use the existing bike racks until then.

Year 3 and 4 playground: The Year 3 & 4 playground is still somewhat congested, especially at the end of the day. Our Year 3 children are finding it hard, and at times a little overwhelming, to spot whoever is collecting them, as the teachers are not always able to bring the classes right out onto the playground. Could I please reiterate the request to move further back, away from the mobiles, so that the teachers are able to reach an area where the children can quickly and safely identify their grown-ups?
If we continue to experience problems then we may well have to demarcate a collection area/line.

APP grids: In school we use APP (Assessing Pupil’s Progress) grids in Reading, Writing and Maths. These sheets identify the skills that the children need to master at each level and teachers use them to focus their teaching within lessons. They are updated throughout the year and shared with the children so that they know their next steps in learning.
If you would like a copy of your child’s sheets in all/any subject please contact their teacher. This will help you to understand what the children are working on at present and where their learning needs to go next. We appreciate that many parents want to work with and support their children at home, and we hope that this will help you to do so.

Music Lessons: If your child is in Years 4, 5 or 6 and is interested in learning a musical instrument, please contact the school office for details.
Lessons have now started and band sessions will be resuming on Monday 22nd September.
Drum lessons have moved to Tuesdays between 1pm and 3pm, starting tomorrow, 16th September.

Midday staff: Due to members of the midday team taking up other jobs, we currently have vacancies for midday staff. If you are interested in the posts please contact the school office for an application form. All forms need to be returned by 12 noon on Friday 19th September.
With Mrs Verigotta leaving, I am delighted to inform you that Mrs McConnell will be taking over as Midday Supervisor on Monday 22nd September.

Year 6 – Application for High School: It is time for Year 6 parents to indicate their preferred schools for their child in September 2015. Applications are to be made on the Council’s Online system and parents must apply to their Local Authority for a school place, even if the school is located outside the area. The deadline for application is 31st October 2014.
The open evening at Bramhall High School is on Wednesday 15th October, between 6:00 and 8:30pm.
This is an opportunity for you to view the school, meet some of the current pupils and speak to staff.

Upper Key Stage 2 phase leader: I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Lamb has been appointed as Upper Key Stage 2 phase leader. If there are any queries or concerns that class teachers cannot sort for you in years 5 and 6, Mrs Lamb should be your next port of call. She will then escalate anything to me should the need arise.
