Nevill Road Junior’s decision to put on a full scale stage musical has been rewarded with three sell-out shows.
The pupils of Nevill Road Junior School’s Performance Club have staged annual productions for a number of years but this year pulled off their most ambitious show yet – a full production of the musical Annie Jr.
The show has been directed by ex-West End performer Toby Hinson who is a parent at the school and runs the after-school Performance Club, along with teachers Claire Wilson and Sophie Paterson. Children, ranging in age from eight to eleven, have been performing the show to three sell-out audiences of family and friends over two days this week (15th and 16th February). Proceeds from the ticket sales have been put back into the club, funding new microphones and stage screens.
Toby, a veteran of West End shows including Les Miserables, Grease and Miss Saigon, said: “I am really proud of how well the children have performed. I don’t know of many primary schools that put on full scale musicals, so they have done exceptionally well. I would like to say a big thank you to the school for all their support. This started out as a small after-school club and has just kept building up and up.”
Acting Headteacher Nicola Jordan added: “The children have been incredible. I was extremely proud watching them on stage. It’s hard to believe they are still in junior school!”
